Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a fast, non- invasive treatment for musculoskeletal pain. At Poshoglian Podiatry we have used Shockwave therapy to successfully treat:

  • Heel pain
  • Achilles pain
  • Shin splints
  • Ankle pain
  • Jumper's knee

During treatment, a high-intensity acoustic wave interacts with the tissues of the lower limbs and feet. This leads to a range of beneficial effects including reversal of chronic inflammation, stimulation of collagen and break up of calcium build-up. These mechanisms create an optimal healing environment. As the injured area is returned to normal, functionality is restored and pain is relieved over the long term.

There may be slight discomfort during the treatment, dependent on the pain already being experienced in the area. As the treatment is quite short most patients are able to tolerate the discomfort. The intensity can also be adjusted throughout the treatment.

How many sessions will I require?

The number of sessions will depend on the severity of the presenting complaint and how the tissue responds. The effects of Shockwave therapy are progressive, therefore you will typically need 3-5 treatments every 1-2 weeks.

Are there any restrictions after treatment?

As some soreness may be experienced in the area being treated, it is recommend to avoid physical activity for 24 to 48 hours after treatment.
